C21 Rail GrinderC21 Rail Grinder
Rail grinding had expanded from a single machine operation in 2001 to a 5-machine operation currently, grinding 10,000 miles of track annually. Rail grinding is a key maintenance task to ensure that rail profile is maintained and fatigue is managed to give optimum rail life.

Infrastructure Monitoring:

Serco Rail Operations operates a number of specialised trains to record data on the condition of the railway infrastructure.

New Measurement TrainNMT
Network Rail’s flagship New Measurement Train recording track geometry data on all of the country’s mainlines on a fortnightly basis at speeds up to 110mph.

Track Recording UnitTRU
Track geometry recording by the Track Recording Unit and Track Inspection Coach allows maintenance engineers to assess the relative position of the two rails.

Ultrasonic Test UnitsUTU
The ultrasonic test units (UTU) detects cracks within rails in order that they can be rectified before they reach dangerous lengths.

Mentor Test TrainMentor
Overhead line monitoring using the Mentor test train to ensure that the overhead lines are in specification to supply power to electric trains.

Structure Gauging TrainStructure Gauging
The Structure Gauging train uses light and laser technology to measure the distance between the track and structures to ensure that there is sufficient clearance to operate trains safely.

Radio Survey

IRIS 2IRIS 2
The IRIS 2 surveys radio signal strength to ensure that radio based communications with trains are maintained at acceptable levels.
