Design Awards

Date : 10 January 2007

Serco has won an award for its lighting and electrical design work as part of a project to improve the North East’s only remaining Victorian pier.  Serco’s design team was handed the accolade from Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council for its sympathetic and energy efficient lighting of the visitor car park for Saltburn-by-the-Sea’s 618ft pier.

The pier - accessible on foot from the town’s promenade or from a funicular railway cliff lift – was renovated last year with help from the National Lottery and local fundraising. Serco’s consideration of the environmental impacts of the car park lighting design, including light spill and minimising production of carbon emissions, contributed to the award win.

The design incorporated the latest advances in white light lamp technology, which provides good colour rendering ability and ensures the number of lighting units and energy consumption is less than more traditional forms of white light source. The layout of the design also ensured that no parking spaces were lost.

Tim Gammons, Director of Serco’s Transport Consulting Group, said: “The revived pier at Saltburn-by-the-Sea is attracting record numbers of visitors – we are proud to have contributed to this, and to be recognised for our efforts by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council.”
Serco is currently providing a number of services to Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and is acting as external Technical Advisor for a Street Lighting PFI project.  The role has involved the writing of an Output Specification, bidder negotiations and ITN and BaFO evaluations of bidders’ technical submissions.  Other roles being provided are detailed design of lighting in accordance with BS 5489, design checks for Section 278 works and maintenance support.
