North America, Serco employs 700 drivers on a range of contracts. Between them, they drive a wide variety of vehicles – from certified passenger carriers to aerial lifts and power line maintenance trucks.

While most drivers had perfectly sound records, some did not, with the less accomplished considered a risk to themselves and other road users. They were also threatening to push Serco's insurance premiums sky high.

To ensure all drivers met Serco standards, we launched a safe driver programme under the guidance of Bill Miller, Corporate Safety Manager at Serco North America. Following a review of motor vehicle records, drivers on the programme were classified as authorised, high-risk or disqualified. They also received training in defensive driving techniques as well as accident investigation and notification procedures.

Commenting on the programme's outcomes, Bill says: “Among other positives, it has reduced our auto insurance premium costs by over 50 per cent. For some contracts, that can mean saving tens of thousands of dollars directly onto their bottom line.”

Sarah Romagnoli is the Office Administrator at Serco's contract in Seminole County, Florida, where all 39 employees have successfully completed the programme. As she points out: “Improving safety standards and saving money at the same time are good for our customers and our staff. Everyone in the office agrees that going through the programme was a small price to pay given the potential benefits. Overall, it has been a win-win experience for everyone.”
