We pride ourselves on the quality of our environmental stewardship and it is particularly gratifying when our environmental management skills are recognised and sought after by key customers.

This has proved the case with JEMMS, the Joint Environmental Material Management Service we developed in partnership with the US Department of Defense, one of our biggest customers.

Department of Defense installations use a variety of hazardous materials during the course of their operations. JEMMS designs, develops and deploys a standardised methodology for improving the way all branches of the US military manage these materials.

Serco is legally obliged to provide this service as part of its contract. But JEMMS goes way beyond the letter of the law by successfully applying a common management system to a diverse range of customers. Among many other benefits, achieving standardisation has enabled the US military to achieve consistent and effective environmental compliance. It has also helped to reduce costs and foster the development of innovative pollution prevention solutions.

JEMMS has set the template for the future of hazardous material management, transforming the way the US military deals with this highly complex function. In the process, it has significantly enhanced the Department of Defense’s own environmental stewardship.
