In 2000, Australian entertainer Nikki Webster boarded the Indian Pacific train leaving Sydney for Perth to launch the first-ever Indian Pacific Outback Christmas Train. The event now enjoys such a loyal following among communities along the Serco-operated Sydney to Perth route that it has become an integral part of the Outback Christmas for the remote communities, some walking for miles to see the train come in.

The special annual train is Serco's way of thanking communities along the Indian Pacific route for their support. While spreading the festive spirit to remote areas, it also raises money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia.

Every year, a famous Australian entertainer follows in Nikki Webster's train tracks to perform whistle-stop free shows at stations along the route. Last Christmas, Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian was the star closely followed by the on-board Santa for the little ones.
