In the mountainous surrounds of Hong Kong, road tunnels provide vital commuter links. Each day, more than 90,000 vehicles can pass through the Serco-operated Lion Rock Tunnel
In such a busy system, the safe, smooth-running of the tunnel is down to co-operation and trust

Serco

We improve services by managing people, processes, technology and assets more effectively.

Employee Relations

Serco is proud of its employee relations record. We work to foster an atmosphere of mutual trust, harmony and respect among our employees and the customers we serve. Our commitment to equality of opportunity and diversity is deep rooted.

We’re passionate about communication and work to ensure it’s always a two-way process. All our employees have the opportunity to be involved in regular meetings, and over half have access to team briefings.  20% of Serco publish their own newsletters, supplementing the company-wide magazine ‘Our World’. As well as our efforts at a local level, we believe it’s important to get a broad picture of the views of people across Serco. Our most recent employee survey was conducted by independent research company MORI in 2002. As well as revealing that 95% of staff regarded their work as ‘more than just a job’, it showed a particularly encouraging enthusiasm for the change process.

Good employee relations are essential to our continued success.  When we take over public sector contracts, we often inherit complex terms and conditions of employment. Wherever possible we sit down and talk to employees themselves, or their representatives, and develop terms and conditions that are relevant to today’s business circumstances. We wholeheartedly support the UK’s Transfer of Undertakings Protection of Employment (TUPE) regulations. Our aim is always to build effective partnerships that deliver real improvements to business performance, terms and conditions of employment and employee involvement.

In addition, Serco has been recognised by the Equal Opportunities Commission for our work on equal pay, having put a lot of focus onto this area over recent years. Serco’s chairman, Kevin Beeston sits on the recently announced TUC commission on vulnerable employment.
