In such a busy system, the safe, smooth-running of the tunnel is down to co-operation and trust

Nuclear Safety

Serco is a partner in AWE Management Ltd (AWE ML), which runs AWE for the UK government.  One of the AWE ML Board’s explicit objectives is to ‘develop a safety culture and record in the operation of AWE that will be seen by its stakeholders to be world-class’.

The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) has two main sites, at Aldermaston and Burghfield in Berkshire.  Like many other large and diverse industrial complexes they use potentially hazardous materials and produce waste.  In AWE’s case some of these materials and waste products are radioactive.  They recognise that the nature of AWE’s work makes it a focus for public concern about environmental, health and safety matters.  And they continually strive to ensure that their performance in all these areas is exemplary.

As well as its experienced and effective safety function, AWE ML also has an Independent Safety Director.  The Safety Director reports directly to the ML Board and advises on risk management, safety precautions and global best practice.  The Safety Director is also able to give an independent assessment of performance, and champion the maintenance of a world-class safety culture.

Full details on their approach to safety and environmental issues and their performance are detailed on the AWE website at www.awe.co.uk
