Health and Safety
Safeguarding the health, safety and welfare of our people, our customers and the public we serve is integral to our business and an absolute priority in everything that we do. We recognise the inseparable relationship between our health and safety performance and our business success. That is why a commitment to operating in a safe and socially responsible manner is embedded in the way we manage our business.
As our contracts have grown more diverse and complex, the range of risks we need to manage has grown significantly. To meet this challenge, we have developed an increasingly rigorous safety management system that we subject to continuous review and improvement. The Health, Safety and Welfare page on our Group website provides a comprehensive overview of this system and details the theories, policies and standards that underpin it. In this section, we focus on how we transformed theory into practice during 2005 with a succession of health and safety achievements.
During the year, our business teams reinforced their worldwide reputation as leaders in safety management. Their expertise at designing and implementing world-class aviation safety management systems (ASMS) is just one area where they excel. In the Middle East, for example, our strength in this highly specialised field has made us a driving force behind the development of ASMS across the region’s airport network. At Dubai Airport alone, our air traffic controllers helped to land almost 22 million passengers safely in 2004. This pattern of reliability is repeated in North America, where our air traffic controllers in 54 different towers helped to land safely almost five million air passengers without incident during the same period. Meanwhile, Serco Assurance continues to reinforce its global reputation as a centre of excellence in safety critical industries, risk, reliability and plant performance.
